Account deletion
Deleting your GoodCents account
This page is for GoodCents: Class Economy, published by Andrew Cyrus Jahan. You can delete your account from inside the app, in about four taps. Nobody has to approve it and you do not have to ask a teacher.

The steps. Open GoodCents → tap the Me tab → Close account → confirm. Your sign-in stops working immediately.
1. How to delete your account
- Open GoodCents and sign in as usual.
- Tap the Me tab.
- Tap Close account.
- Confirm when asked. The app tells you what it settled before it finishes.
It takes effect straight away. There is no waiting period and no cooling-off window, so treat it as final.
If you cannot get into the app — a lost school Google account, a phone you no longer have — email [email protected] from any address and say which school you attended and the name you used. We will verify with the school before deleting anything, because otherwise anyone could close anyone's account.
2. What happens to your balance first
You are leaving an economy, not just an app, so the app settles up before it closes anything. In order: your investments are sold at their last known price, your savings are withdrawn, awards that had not yet landed are cancelled, and anything you owe is repaid — the school bank first, then classmates who lent to you, shared out in proportion. Whatever is left over returns to the school's treasury.
If you owe more than you hold, the remaining debt is written off. Nothing follows you and no one can pursue it.
3. What is deleted
- Your sign-in — the link between your Google account and GoodCents. You can no longer log in, and no one can log in as you.
- Your profile: display name, email address and avatar.
- Your membership of the school.
- Your notification tokens, so the app can never reach your phone again.
- Your name on the school's roster, replaced with “Former student”.
Deleting your GoodCents account does not touch your Google account. That is yours and we have never had any control over it.
4. What the school keeps, and why
The school keeps the anonymised transactions — the amounts, dates and types, with no name attached to them.
This is a deliberate limit and it is worth being plain about. GoodCents is a shared ledger: every student's balance is the running total of every entry around it, and the school's total money supply is calculated from what everyone holds. Erasing entries from the middle of it would silently corrupt other students' balances and make the school's books stop adding up. So the entries stay and the identity goes. What remains cannot be traced back to you from inside the app.
5. How long anything survives
- Live data: your identity is gone the moment the deletion completes.
- Backups: the database is backed up nightly and each backup is kept for 90 days, then destroyed. A deletion ages out of backups within that window. We do not reach into old backups to erase individual records, because restoring one would then produce a broken database.
- Anonymised transactions: kept as part of the school's records for as long as that school uses GoodCents.
6. Staff, schools, and asking us directly
- Staff accounts delete the same way: Me → Close account.
- A teacher removing a student is a different thing. It settles the same balances and ends participation, but it is a school record rather than an account deletion: the student's name stays on the roster and their Google sign-in is untouched. A student who also wants their account gone should delete it themselves, or ask us.
- A whole school can have all of its data deleted by writing to [email protected] from a school address.
